Genesis of Social Welfare Residential Schools
1971 - Andhra Pradesh pioneered starting of residential schools for poorer sections at secondary education level.
1983 - To provide quality education to talented SC children coming from rural areas, the GOAP started 46 residential schools for Schedule Caste children during 1983-84 under the management of the Department of Social Welfare.
1986 - Residential System of Education through Navodaya Vidyalayas has become a part of the new education policy of 1986.
Formation of APSWREIS
In order to oversee the functioning of residential schools it was felt necessary to have an autonomous management body under the department of Social Welfare. This APSWREIS (Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society), state level organization for the management of these schools came into existence in 1987. The main activities of the APSWREIS are to establish and maintain, Social Welfare Residential schools and colleges.
